The Inca trail leads through the protected wild nature of the Peruvian jungle and forest steppe, passes several archeological Inca sights and offers impressive views. The Incas used this itinerary for the pilgrimage to the sacred citadel Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

DAY 01: CUSCO –CALCA – LARES HOT SPRINGS – HUACAHUASI

The day begins bright and early with a 5:00 am pick-up from Cusco. By 6:30 am, we will make our way through the winding roads of the Sacred Valley. We will be reaching the picturesque town of Calca by 7:15 am. Here, we can pause to stretch our legs, perhaps grab a light snack, and soak in the serenity of the morning.

By 9:30 am, our journey continues to the Lares Hot Springs. Once we arrive at around 11:00 am, we will be greeted by the tantalizing vision of steaming waters against the backdrop of towering peaks. Here, we can indulge in nature’s spa, letting the therapeutic waters rejuvenate our body and mind.

Post a relaxing soak, we will enjoy a hearty lunch at 1:00 pm. Fueled and refreshed, our trek truly kicks off as we head towards our first campsite at Huacahuasi. As we traverse the path, the majesty of the Andes will accompany us at every step. We will encounter local communities, gaining insights into their traditional way of life.

By 5:00 pm, the quaint village of Huacahuasi beckons. Here, we will set up camp, savor a delicious dinner, and rest under the starlit Andean sky. We will be gearing up for the adventures that lie ahead on the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu.

DAY 02: HUACAHUASI – ISAYCOCHA

As the Andean sun gently illuminates our camp, our day at Huacahuasi commences at 6:00 am. We will begin with a nutritious breakfast to fuel the journey ahead. With the first light of dawn, the breathtaking views of the mountains will set the tone for the day.

By 7:30 am, we will set off towards Isaycocha. This segment of our trek will challenge us, as we ascend to the highest point of our journey. The trail is lined with panoramic vistas. As we climb, we can observe the stark beauty of the Andean landscapes unfolding.

Around noon, we will reach the pass, standing at a formidable altitude where the mountains seem to touch the sky. After taking in the awe-inspiring views and perhaps capturing a few memories with our cameras, we will begin our descent towards Isaycocha.

The downhill trek is gentler on the legs but equally mesmerizing for the senses. By 4:00 pm, the serene lagoon of Isaycocha will appear on the horizon, marking our destination. Here, we will establish our camp, nestled beside the tranquil waters.

Dinner at 6:30 pm will wrap up our eventful day, as we unwind to the calming sounds of nature and the shimmering lagoon. We will be preparing ourselves for the next leg of the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu.

DAY 03: ISAYCOCHA – PATACANCHA WILLOQ – PUMAMARKA – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES.

As the dawn’s first light graces the serene lagoon of Isaycocha, our third day on the Lares Trek begins. At 6:00 am, we will enjoy a warm breakfast, gearing up for the day’s trek.

By 7:00 am, our journey towards Patacancha Willoq commences. As we progress, the scenic landscapes of the Andes will provide a splendid backdrop, ensuring each step is a visual treat. We can expect to cross local communities, giving us a chance to immerse ourselves briefly in their rich cultural tapestry.

By 11:00 am, our descent will lead us to the vibrant community of Patacancha Willoq. After a short break, the next leg of our journey towards Pumamarka unfolds. By 1:00 pm, we will find ourselves amidst the ancient terraces of Pumamarka. Here we will take a pause to enjoy lunch and absorb the historical significance of the area.

The afternoon will see us making our way to Ollantaytambo. By 4:00 pm, this ancient town, steeped in history and lore, will greet us.

But our day isn’t over just yet. At 5:30 pm, we will board the train for Aguas Calientes. As we journey on, the scenic beauty of the region will whisk by, offering one last treat for the day.

By 7:00 pm, Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, welcomes us. Here, we will settle in for the night, with the promise of the lost city awaiting us the following morning.

DAY 04: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – OLLANTAYTAMBO – CUSCO

On our fourth day, the anticipation is palpable. At 5:00 am, we’ll start our day in Aguas Calientes with a light breakfast. We will be energizing ourselves for the grandeur that awaits.

By 5:30 am, we’ll embark on our journey to Machu Picchu. As we ascend, the mist-covered mountains will gradually unveil the lost city, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological wonders. As the sun rises, the golden rays illuminating Machu Picchu will offer a sight we’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, we will fully immerse ourselves in this marvel, exploring its nooks and crannies and understanding its historical significance. A guided tour will provide insights into the mysteries and architectural genius of the Incas.

Around 11:00 am, we’ll commence our descent back to Aguas Calientes. We can grab a fulfilling lunch in town and perhaps indulge in some last-minute souvenir shopping.

At 2:30 pm, the train will whisk us away from Aguas Calientes, retracing our path towards Ollantaytambo. From there, a bus will take us back to Cusco. By 7:00 pm, we will find ourselves back in Cusco. This will bring our Lares Trek to Machu Picchu to a memorable close.

 What you need to bring on Lares trek.

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend the use of a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good size daypack is also essential.
